This AP Physics 1 scoring calculator gives an estimated score. The section weights and FRQ point values are official College Board figures; the composite-to-AP-score cutoffs are historically-informed estimates, because College Board does not publish exact cutoffs and the curve shifts slightly each year. Use it for study planning, not as a guarantee.

How This AP Physics 1 Score Calculator Works

The AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based exam is split evenly between two sections. This AP Physics 1 score calc applies College Board's published structure for the current exam:

50% Multiple Choice

42 questions · 85 minutes

50% Free Response

4 questions · 40 points · 95 minutes

Your Multiple Choice score is converted to a percentage of the questions and multiplied by 50. Your four FRQ scores are added together (out of 40 points), converted to a percentage, and also multiplied by 50. The two halves combine into a composite out of 100, which maps to your 1–5 AP score.

Worked example

A student gets 30/42 on Multiple Choice and scores 7, 8, 6 and 5 on the four FRQs (26/40):

  • MC: (30 ÷ 42) × 50 = 35.7 pts
  • FRQ: (26 ÷ 40) × 50 = 32.5 pts
  • Composite: 68.2 / 100 → estimated AP Score of 4

AP Physics 1 Exam Format: The Four Free Response Questions

The exam lasts 3 hours in total and is a hybrid digital exam: you answer Multiple Choice questions in the Bluebook app and handwrite free-response answers in a paper booklet. A calculator and the official equation sheet are allowed on both sections. The four FRQs always appear in the same order:

FRQQuestion typePointsShare of total score
1Mathematical Routines — derive, calculate and represent a scenario1012.5%
2Translation Between Representations — connect diagrams, graphs and equations1215%
3Experimental Design and Analysis — plan a lab procedure and analyze data1012.5%
4Qualitative/Quantitative Translation — justify a claim with reasoning and math810%

FRQ 2 is the single biggest free-response question — losing a few points there costs more than the same loss on FRQ 4.

The course covers eight units: kinematics, force and translational dynamics, work/energy/power, linear momentum, torque and rotational dynamics, energy and momentum of rotating systems, oscillations, and fluids. Fluids was added in the 2024–25 course redesign, so older practice materials won't include it.

Understanding Your AP Physics 1 Score Calculator Results

AP Physics 1 historically uses a lower curve than most AP exams, so these bands sit lower than our other AP calculators. They are historically-informed estimates, not official College Board cutoffs.

AP Physics 1 Score Distribution and Pass Rate

Here is the official 2026 AP Physics 1 score distribution published by College Board — the first full look at how students performed after the redesigned exam settled in:

AP Score% of students (2026)
519%
424%
325%
215%
117%

That puts the 2026 AP Physics 1 pass rate (a score of 3 or higher) at 68%. For context, the exam spent most of the previous decade near the bottom of the AP pass-rate rankings — in 2016 fewer than 40% of students scored a 3 or above. The redesign brought a much healthier result, but Physics 1 is still one of the lower-passing science exams, which is why knowing where you stand before test day matters.

How to Use This AP Physics 1 Scoring Calculator

  1. Take a timed practice exam — ideally a released College Board exam or a Bluebook practice test.
  2. Pick the right question count. Choose 42 for the current format, or 40 if you're scoring a 2025 practice exam.
  3. Score each FRQ with the official scoring guidelines from AP Central, then enter each question's points separately.
  4. Read the "next band" line under the composite bar — it tells you how many composite points you need for the next AP score.
  5. Target your weakest high-value area. FRQ 2 (12 points) and the MC section move your composite the most, so they're usually the best places to spend study time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this AP Physics 1 score calculator?

The math is exact: it uses College Board's official 50/50 section weighting and the official FRQ point values (10, 12, 10 and 8). The step from composite score to AP score uses estimated cutoffs, since College Board doesn't publish them, so treat the result as a strong estimate rather than a guarantee.

How long is the AP Physics 1 exam?

3 hours: 85 minutes for 42 Multiple Choice questions and 95 minutes for 4 free-response questions. The 2027 exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5, 2027.

Is AP Physics 1 hard?

It has a reputation as one of the tougher AP exams because it tests reasoning and explanation, not just plugging numbers into formulas. The math is algebra-based, but you need to justify answers in words, interpret graphs and design experiments. The 2026 AP Physics 1 pass rate of 68% shows it's very passable with focused practice.

Does AP Physics 1 give college credit?

Many colleges award credit or placement for an introductory algebra-based physics course, usually for a 3, 4 or 5. Selective schools often require a 4 or 5, and engineering or physics majors may need calculus-based physics (AP Physics C) instead. Use College Board's credit policy search to check your target schools.

Why are the AP Physics 1 cutoffs lower than other AP exams?

Physics 1 questions are demanding, so scoring a 5 has historically required a lower raw percentage than exams like AP World History or AP English Language. That's why this AP Physics 1 score calc uses its own subject-specific bands instead of the cutoffs from our other AP calculators.

Can I use this calculator for older AP Physics 1 practice tests?

Yes for 2025 practice exams — switch the Multiple Choice field to 40 questions. Exams from before the 2024–25 redesign used a different structure (50 MC questions and different FRQ types), so results from those won't map accurately.
